More and more mobile subscriptions include roaming in some countries (for example, Free Mobile has announced this for the whole of the European Union) at the rate of 35 days per year (or more or less the number of holidays of the French) but this is not always the case. And the destinations included in the package vary from one operator to another and from one formula to another. So you have to log on to your operator’s site and look at the details of your subscription to see if your destination country is one of the lucky ones. Take the opportunity to make sure that the option “World” of your package is activated; it is not always the case. No package that includes roaming? Three possible options
If, by bad luck, your package does not work where you go on vacation, three options: do not touch your phone holidays, take a local SIM card and a short subscription when you arrive in the country or subscribe to a option (often quite expensive and restricted) of your operator. In the latter case, look ahead for different formulas rather than waiting for the SMS on arrival. Attention, it takes sometimes 24 to 48 hours for activation. Good to know: a package of 500 MB of data corresponds to about 25 minutes of surfing, sending/receiving 9 mails and downloading seven applications. In short, it can go very fast, especially if you use GPS and mapping.
Prevent data consumption abroad
Watch Facebook every 10 minutes, check your mails twenty times a day, do a web search—so many bad habits to give up when you go on vacation. There is also an option to disconnect. At a minimum, you will have to prevent unwanted connections that would be charged expensive and in addition to your package.
On an iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular Network and make sure the option Data abroad is deactivated. Be careful, do not activate the new option appeared (“Internet UE”), it would block roaming.
For an Android smart phone (the path may change slightly depending on the phone brand and version of Android), go to Settings, Wireless and Network, Mobile Network and verify that data roaming is disabled.
Or make sure to limit data consumption
To do this, you will need to make sure that many background tasks are disabled.
On an iPhone, in Settings> Cellular Network, going down to the bottom of the page, you will find a list (long or short) of applications that use cellular data to update. It is better to disable them abroad (it can be tedious but you will have time during the trip by plane, train or car). Also, in Settings> iTunes Store / App Store, disable automatic application updates or at least disable updates using cellular data. And in General> Background Refresh, disable the service.
On an Android phone, go to Settings and then the Notification Center. Go to the Apps tab then Network apps. Here, a list of your apps is displayed and you can limit their updates / use to Wi-Fi only (for all or some only). Attention, there are the installed apps and system applications (two tabs) to manage.
And watch what you have actually consumed.
For that, you will have to reset your data consumption monitor. This way, you will know exactly what you have consumed (and this may be useful in case of disagreement with the operator even if it is not a formal proof).
